Hypnotherapy in Langdon Hills

Q. What is hypnotherapy?
A. Hypnotherapy is the use of any therapeutic or counselling technique to assist you with resolving a problem or difficulty, whilst you are in a relaxed hypnotic state. It is very safe and usually offers much quicker results than other talking therapies.

Q. What are the effects and benefits of hypnotherapy?
A. Hypnosis cannot change personality but it can be used therapeutically to enhance and develop self-confidence, allowing you to become more in tune with your own true inner self. During hypnotherapy your conscious and subconscious minds are enabled to work together in balance and harmony, without conflict. For this reason under therapeutic guidance you can be supported to bring about desired changes to resolve personal issues such as fear of flying, fear of needles, fear of spiders and any other fear you can think of.

You may want to resolve difficulties involving a lack of confidence, or public speaking anxiety, unhealthy eating patterns and weight management issues. Debilitating disabilities which can be aggravated or caused by stress, such as irritable bowel syndrome, anxiety or any condition affecting the immune system may all respond well to hypnotherapy.

Hypnotherapy is useful in empowering people to overcome and change unwanted habits, such as in the quit smoking program, it may be effective in dealing with fears and phobias, can be used to psychologically improve athletic ability, manage stress, enhance job performance, increase and boost self-confidence, reduce anxieties and may also help resolve many other issues and problems.

Q. How does hypnotherapy differ from traditional therapy?
A. Traditional therapies deal with life difficulties on a conscious or cognitive level, whereas hypnotherapy seeks to deal with personal difficulties at both the conscious and subconscious level simultaneously, seeking to resolve the causes at a much deeper level.

Q. Can therapy under hypnosis resolve all difficulties?
A. For some issues hypnotherapy may be contra-indicated; for example it is never used with people suffering with epilepsy or with heart conditions and strokes. It is therefore extremely important to have an initial consultation to ascertain which specific type of therapy might be indicated, as each therapeutic program is uniquely designed for each individual client. For many people one or two hypnotherapy sessions are all that is required to bring about permanent beneficial changes. However some individuals with deep seated difficulties may require a longer period of analysis or the use of Freudian free association to identify and resolve more profound problems.

Q. What if I cannot be hypnotized?
A. Most people can be hypnotized but there are a few exceptions such as people under the influence of drugs or alcohol, people with low IQ's or learning disabilities and those with certain medical conditions such as epilepsy. In addition, people with medical diagnoses will always be advised to seek the agreement of their GP before undertaking any hypnotic therapy.

Q. How is hypnotherapy used to resolve personal difficulties or problems?
A. Hypnotherapy is a talking therapy which can be usefully used with most therapeutic methodologies and techniques. Once a difficulty has been identified and you have made the decision that you would like to proceed , I will invite you to sit back and relax to the sound of my voice as I guide you through the therapeutic process.

Q. Why is accessing the subconscious mind so important in hypnotherapy?
A. Have you ever gone to sleep with a problem on your mind only to wake the following morning with an answer? Well, that is you using your subconscious mind to resolve an issue that has been troubling you. Therapy under hypnosis enables you to take control of that same process for your own benefit.

Q. Why do hypnotherapist's work with the subconscious mind?
A. Because the subconscious mind is non-judgmental; it is just as likely to absorb a negative or destructive value system as it is to absorb constructive ideas. For example, a phobic reaction towards fear of failure may develop as a result of child been repeatedly told that they are stupid, or someone may feel humiliated by his/her inability to achieve the same as another person. This fear may then manifest in the subconscious mind by creating a self-fulfilling prophecy of failure. As a result, the individual may set themselves up for failure again and again or maybe not even bother trying to achieve, because they just know deep down inside that they will fail.

The therapist seeks to unlock and reframe negative subconscious conditioning, changing negative self-talk into positive self-affirming self belief. Using the behaviourist psychological concept known as Operant Conditioning, the therapeutic use of positive reframing whilst in a hypnotic relaxed state, has an extinguishing effect on negative behaviour patterns and habits, allowing the subconscious mind to accept positive suggestion for change. Positive self belief can make all the difference and, instead of always coming second (silver medal), could give that few seconds extra boost enabling the achievement of a gold.

Q. What benefits would I gain?
A. If you want to change your life in some manner or heal emotional issues, then hypnotherapy may offer the answers you are seeking, enabling you to balance and harmonize your life choices, offering you the opportunity to achieve success and self-fulfilment.

Q. Will I be aware of what is happening?
A. Yes, you will be totally aware of what is happening and will feel in control at all times.

Q. How many sessions will I need?
A. This varies according to each individual and the problem you wish to deal with. Sometimes only one session is necessary whereas other personal issues may require four or more treatment sessions.

Q. What is the purpose of having a free 30 minute, no obligation, initial consultation?
A. It is important to feel that the therapist you are consulting is the best one for you. Therefore a free initial consultation offers you the best opportunity to decide if a particular therapist is someone you can talk to about anything, no matter how embarrassing, distressing or difficult your problem may seem.
